Volunteer Highlight: Steve Quick

Steve lo resDuring the Pursuit for those with disABILITIES capital campaign and cross-country bike ride, The Center met many cherished friends and supporters. Not least of those is Steve Quick, a Houston-area fitness instructor and former Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Commando who was introduced to The Center through the campaign.

Although he was unable to join the cross-country riders on the road, Steve made a personal commitment to ride the 3,500-mile journey on the stationary bikes at Pursuit’s official HQ, the “Mission Control” spin room at The Center. Over his 60-day personal Pursuit odyssey, the clients at The Center formed relationships with Steve and looked for him daily during their own rides in Mission Control.

By the end of the Pursuit ride, Steve had seen firsthand the positive difference exercise classes made in the lives of The Center’s clients. Inspired by the camaraderie, fitness, and happiness these classes encouraged, Steve made a volunteer commitment to teach spin classes at The Center twice a week.

Since August 2016, Steve has been a regular at The Center, bringing smiles to his spin students every time he visits. In addition to cycling, Steve incorporates arm and floor exercises into the routine so that clients with more limited mobility can be included in the fun. While taking part in the class, Steve’s students have shown improvements in physical fitness and built lasting friendships with Steve and each other.

In recognition of his profound positive impact on the lives of The Center’s clients, we were proud to honor Steve as the Pursuit Innovator of the Year at our recent 17th Annual Luncheon. We cannot thank Steve enough for his dedication to our clients and look forward to a future of fitness and friendship together!
