The Center for Pursuit is the largest non-profit provider of mental retardation programs in Houston, TX. For over 60 years, we’ve been helping adults of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) obtain the skills and experience they need to live a more independent life.
Our IDD resources in Houston, TX, focus on three elements to help our clients become all they can be and become active participants in the community. These three elements are:
- Choice
- Growth
- Independence
Our Houston IDD support services team members help our clients determine what their vision of success looks like, and then they help them develop a plan to achieve their goals. We strive to help our clients gain the greatest possible level of self-sufficiency. This process involves all of these elements.
A Multitude of Programs to Provide Mentally Handicapped Support in Houston, TX
In addition to our day services, we offer residential programs including assisted, independent and supported independent living options. We offer a wide range of programs for both our day and residential clients. These include:
- Employment programs: include taking clients through every step of the job application and interview process
- Enrichment programs: helping people with the skills they need for daily living
- Professional counseling: group and individual
- Fitness programs: specially designed programs for those with IDD
We also offer respite services so that busy caregivers can take some time for themselves.

We’re Growing to Better Serve Houston
The Center has come a long way since it was started in 1950 by a small group of parents who were concerned about what the future would hold for their children with IDD. The goal continues to be to help those with IDD live up to their full potential.
We are currently building a new campus in the historic East End, so that we can expand our mental retardation programs in Houston, TX. Thanks to our generous donors, The Center for Pursuit is able to help more people throughout our community.
